Method 2 (processing of ABPs)
Method 2 for the processing of animal by-products includes specific procedures for their treatment to ensure their safe management and use in compliance with EU regulations.
Method 2 is one of the seven processing methods for animal by-products (ABPs) laid down in Annex IV to Regulation (EU) No 142/2011. The methods themselves are not tied to a material category; the category determines which method is mandatory for a given use. Category 3 material may be processed by method 2.
Method 2 technical details
- Particle size reduction: If the particle size exceeds 150 millimeters, it must be reduced using suitable equipment to no more than 150 mm. The effectiveness of the equipment must be inspected every day and any deviations must be resolved immediately.
- Heat treatment: After particle size reduction, ABPs must be heated to reach core temperatures:
- Greater than 120 °C for at least 50 minutes
- Greater than 110 °C for at least 120 minutes
- Greater than 100 °C for at least 125 minutes
- Batch processing: The entire process must take place in a batch processing system. This ensures consistent treatment and compliance with safety standards.
- Regulatory compliance: Compliance with these processing standards ensures that the treated ABPs are safe for subsequent use. For Category 3 material, this includes feed. Rendered fat processed by method 2 may be used in feed for farmed animals as well as in dog and cat food. For protein meals of mammalian origin, method 2 is only permitted if the product is destined exclusively for pet food, is transported in dedicated containers and is consigned directly. Uses for energy production, fertilizers and other technical applications remain valid as well.
