Tallow (rendered)
Tallow is a type of rendered fat obtained mainly from beef or mutton and often used in a variety of industrial applications, such as soap, candle and lubricant production.
Tallow, a very versatile and valuable fat, is obtained by rendering beef or mutton fat. Thanks to its versatility and beneficial properties, it plays a vital role in many industrial applications. Here at PEPITO, we only render Category 3 tallow.
Production process
The production of (most often) beef tallow involves several steps to ensure its purity and quality:
Raw fat collection
- Sources: Fats from beef and mutton are collected from slaughterhouses and meat processing plants.
- Inspection: Raw fat is subject to inspections, to ensure it meets the required standards.
Heat treatment
- Rendering process: Raw fat is rendered and refined using wet or dry rendering methods.
Main parameters for beef fat
- Melting point: It usually ranges between 40–45°C, which is suitable for a variety of industrial applications.
- Free fatty acids (FFAs): They indicate the quality and suitability for various applications.
- Iodine value: It measures the degree of unsaturation of fat, which affects its stability and shelf life.
- Color and aroma: They are influenced by the source and the rendering process.
Wide range of tallow applications
- Soap making: It ensures its hardness and a creamy lather.
- Candles: It is used as a basic ingredient in candle making due to its high melting point.
- Lubricants: It serves as a component in industrial lubricants.
- Cosmetics: It is used in skin care products due to its moisturizing properties.
- Animal feed: Sometimes it is used in animal feed formulas due to its high energy content.
