Method 1 ABP processing involves specific procedures to handle and treat animal by-products, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Method 1 ABP processing, according to European Union regulations, is crucial for managing animal by-products (ABP) effectively. This method includes:

  • Handling Procedures: Detailed protocols for the collection, transport, and initial handling of ABP.

  • Treatment Processes: Specific treatments to reduce the risk of contamination and ensure the safe use of ABP. These may include:

    • Heat treatment

    • Chemical treatments

    • Physical separation techniques

  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to EU regulations, such as Regulation 2020/1399, which outlines approved procedures and safety measures.

  • Safety Measures: Implementation of stringent safety protocols to protect both public health and the environment.

Method 1 is designed to transform ABP into usable products while minimising health risks and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Technical Details:

  1. Particle Size Reduction: Animal by-products must be reduced to a particle size no greater than 50 millimetres before processing.

  2. Heat Treatment: The reduced materials must be heated to a core temperature of at least 133°C for at least 20 minutes without interruption, under a pressure of at least 3 bars. This ensures thorough sterilisation.
  3. Pressure Conditions: The pressure must be generated by evacuating all air from the sterilisation chamber and replacing it with steam, creating a saturated steam environment.

  4. Process Systems: Processing can be carried out in either batch or continuous systems, ensuring flexibility in operations.

  5. Verification: The effectiveness of the particle size reduction equipment must be checked daily, and the condition recorded. If larger particles are found, the process must be stopped and equipment repaired before resuming.
