Method 2 ABP processing involves specific procedures for treating animal by-products to ensure they are safely managed and utilised according to EU regulations.

Method 2 ABP processing, as defined by EU regulations, is a vital method for managing Category 1 and Category 2 animal by-products (ABP). This method encompasses the following technical details:

  • Particle Size Reduction: If the particle size exceeds 150 millimetres, it must be reduced using appropriate equipment to ensure it is no greater than 150 millimetres. The equipment's effectiveness must be checked daily, and any discrepancies must be addressed immediately.

  • Heat Treatment: After reduction, the animal by-products must be heated to achieve core temperatures:

    • Greater than 120°C for at least 50 minutes

    • Greater than 110°C for at least 120 minutes

    • Greater than 100°C for at least 125 minutes

  • Batch Processing: The entire process must be conducted in a batch system, ensuring consistent treatment and compliance with safety standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to these processing standards ensures that the treated ABP is safe for its intended use, whether for energy production, fertilisers, or other technical applications.

Method 2 ensures the safe and effective treatment of ABP, minimising risks to public and animal health and adhering to stringent EU regulations.
