Method 6 (processing of ABPs)
Method 6 for the processing of animal by-products includes specific procedures for their treatment, especially those from aquatic animals, to ensure their safe management and use in compliance with EU regulations.
Method 6 for the processing of animal by-products (ABPs), as defined in EU regulations, is crucial for the management of Category 3 by-products originating from aquatic animals or aquatic invertebrates. This method ensures safe and effective treatment of ABPs, minimizes public and animal health risks and complies with strict EU regulations.
Method 6 technical details
-
Particle size reduction: Animal by-products must be reduced to a particle size not exceeding 50 or 30 mm, depending on the heat treatment applied. After reduction, the by-products must be mixed with formic acid to lower the pH to 4 or less and keep it there. The mixture must be stored for at least 24 hours before further treatment.
-
Heat treatment: The mixture must then be heated to:
-
a core temperature of at least 90 °C for at least 60 minutes; or
-
a core temperature of at least 70 °C for at least 60 minutes.
-
When using a continuous system, the flow of the product through the heat convector must be controlled by mechanical commands that limit its movement and ensure sufficient cycle time and temperature.
-
-
Batch or continuous systems: Processing can take place in batch or continuous systems, allowing operational flexibility.
-
Regulatory compliance: Compliance with these processing standards ensures that the treated ABPs are safe for subsequent use, for example in the production of energy, fertilizers or other technical applications.
