Method 2 for the processing of animal by-products includes specific procedures for their treatment to ensure their safe management and use in compliance with EU regulations.

Method 2 for animal by-product (ABP) processing, as defined by EU legislation, is crucial for the management of Categories 1 and 2 animal by-products. Method 2 ensures safe and effective treatment of ABPs, thereby minimizing risks to public and animal health and complying with strict EU regulations. Are you wondering about the technical details of this method? Read on.

Method 2 technical details

  1. Particle size reduction: If the particle size exceeds 150 millimeters, it must be reduced using suitable equipment to no more than 150 mm. The effectiveness of the equipment must be inspected every day and any deviations must be resolved immediately.
  2. Heat treatment: After particle size reduction, ABPs must be heated to reach core temperatures:
    • Greater than 120 °C for at least 50 minutes
    • Greater than 110 °C for at least 120 minutes
    • Greater than 100 °C for at least 125 minutes
  3. Batch processing: The entire process must take place in a batch processing system. This ensures consistent treatment and compliance with safety standards.
  4. Regulatory compliance: Compliance with these processing standards ensures that treated ABPs are safe for subsequent use – for the production of energy, fertilizers, or other technical applications.
